Intellectual disability is characterized by limitations in intellectual functioning and the ability to adapt to the family, social, cultural, school, and work environment.
The main barrier to overcome is family, social, economic, political, and cultural “exclusion”.
In Guatemala, it is estimated that 12% of the population has intellectual disabilities, which represents more than 350,000 Guatemalans. And more than 4 million Guatemalans are affected by being linked to people with intellectual disabilities.
In this testimony, Eduardo and his mother, Carolina tell us about their perseverance and effort to find help. Thanks to the Neurological Institute of Guatemala’s support, Eduardo has received special education and therapies since he was one year old.
Currently, Eduardo works in a company thanks to the skills developed in the comprehensive care program for labor inclusion of the Neurological Institute of Guatemala.
Thanks to your support, you allow us to reach more families like Eduardo’s, who need help to include children and young people with intellectual disabilities and autism in society and reach their full potential
